Edition of 2023: children and privacy

One of the workhorses of privacy foes is the protection of children, the very children that states abandon in the hands of the large centralized platforms now universally adopted in schools.
But you know, there is children’s privacy and children’s privacy!

Chatcontrol: children as a pretext

The governments of EU member states are planning to adopt their official position, called the “general approach,” on the Child Sexual Abuse Regulation (ChatControl for short) at the September 28, 2023 meeting of justice and home affairs ministers. The motivation is always the same: in the face of monsters threatening children, it is worthwhile to automatically and without a judicial warrant intercept all chats and emails of all citizens in order to detect (with a wide margin of error!) child pornography, in disregard of the principle of inviolability of correspondence.

Child abuse is not fought by indiscriminately wiretapping citizens, but by intervening in the social and economic degradation of their families. If we want to implement technical measures in favor of children, then policy might rather focus on how the state today promotes surveillance of students precisely through the adoption in public schools of non-European cloud platforms that drain data without any real Italian and European sovereign control and without any possibility of serious opposition by the individual student or the individual family.

Naturally, the attention of Italian (and part of European) public opinion has been kept dormant both on chatcontrol, and on the issue of school cloud platforms: politics and newspapers have been very careful not to address the issue, and that is why it becomes opportune to mobilize quickly, in order to raise the attention of public opinion, so far incredibly insensitive, on this momentous change in the rule of law and the inviolability of correspondence: today they are preparing a system for us to wiretap all citizens in search of images of abuse; what if tomorrow they extend it to search for any content that is not deemed appropriate for the ideological positions of the government of that time?
